Maren Bell

Statement
Graduating with a Masters in Fine Art from Tufts University and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, Maren studied with accomplised painters and working artists including Anne Craven, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons and Gerald Bergstein.  After living and exhibiting on the East Coast for several years, Maren returned to Indianapolis, Indiana where she now lives and works.  In 2008, Maren received an artist grant to attend the Vermont Studio Center where she started her most recent botanical series.
These paintings are close studies of botanical life created through many layers of acrylic and oil paint.  Interest lies in constructing natural environments that are harmonized in form and space, much like a gardener builds a garden or a florist arranges flowers.  Negative spaces, texture, transparency and most importantly a play between foreground and background are important.  Unlive Western landscapes, the paintings reference Asian flower painting; they reflect the artist's deep appreciation for nature and the balance that must exist for all things to live together.
